Hosea 6

Chapter 6 in 30 seconds

The people say, let us return, He will heal us on the third day. God answers that their love vanishes like the morning dew. What He wants is mercy, not sacrifice.

The Unrepentance of Israel and Judah

1Come, let us return to Yahweh.

For He has torn us to pieces,

but He will heal us;

He has wounded us,

but He will bind up our wounds.

  • HOS 6:1[NOTE]COME, LET US RETURN. The people's words, or Hosea calling them, so they are black. God's answer in 6:4 shows their love did not last. See The Third Day.

2After two days He will revive us;

on the third day He will raise us up,

that we may live in His presence.

  • HOS 6:2[FORESHADOW]On the third day He will raise us up → LK 24:46; 1CO 15:4MEDIUM

3So let us know—

let us press on to know Yahweh.

As surely as the sun rises,

He will appear;

He will come to us like the rain,

like the spring showers that water the earth.

4What shall I do with you, O Ephraim?

What shall I do with you, O Judah?

For your loyalty is like a morning mist,

like the early dew that vanishes.

5Therefore I have hewn them by the prophets;

I have slain them by the words of My mouth,

and My judgments go forth like lightning.

6For I desire mercy, not sacrifice,

and the knowledge of God

rather than burnt offerings.

  • HOS 6:6[QUOTED]Quoted in the New Testament → MT 9:13
  • HOS 6:6[QUOTED]Quoted in the New Testament → MT 12:7
  • HOS 6:6[NOTABLE]Jesus quoted this twice. God cares more about a loving heart than religious routine.
  • HOS 6:6[NOTE]MERCY, NOT SACRIFICE. Jesus quoted this to people who cared more about rules than people, Matthew 9:13 and 12:7.

7But they, like Adam, have transgressed the covenant;

there they were unfaithful to Me.

  • HOS 6:7[NOTE]LIKE ADAM. The first man, who broke God's command, or a town named Adam by the Jordan, Joshua 3:16, or simply like men, as the KJV says. Some say the word there points to a place.

8Gilead is a city of evildoers,

tracked with footprints of blood.

9Like raiders who lie in ambush,

so does a band of priests;

they murder on the way to Shechem;

surely they have committed atrocities.

10In the house of Israel

I have seen a horrible thing:

Ephraim practices prostitution there,

and Israel is defiled.

11Also for you, O Judah,

a harvest is appointed,

when I restore

My people from captivity.

Frequently asked questions

What is TOM?

TOM is The Owner's Manual, a free translation built on the Berean Standard Bible. It uses modern measurements, prints Yahweh where the Hebrew has God's name, and puts words missing from the earliest manuscripts in [square brackets]. Every change is listed in How It Was Translated.

What do the colors mean?

Each color marks one kind of verse: lime green for prophecies about the Messiah, teal for miracles, sand for archaeology, and so on. Tap any color in the chapter key to turn it off. Use Customize to choose exactly which ones you see.

Can I read without highlights?

Yes. Turn off the Highlights switch at the top for plain text. Your choice is remembered on this device.

Do the other translations have the colors too?

Yes. The colors, red letters, bloodline names and study notes come from TOM and are matched to every other translation verse by verse, so you can read the KJV, NIV or any other translation here with the same study helps.

Is this free?

Yes. The whole Bible is free to read online. The printed Owner's Manual Study Bible is coming soon.
