Nahum 2

Chapter 2 in 30 seconds

Nahum gives a play by play of Nineveh's fall like a war reporter. Red shields, flashing chariots, the river gates burst open and the palace melts. The proud city of lions, which fed on the whole world, is now an empty den. And God says, I am against you.

The Overthrow of Nineveh

1One who scatters advances

against you, O Nineveh.

Guard the fortress!

Watch the road!

Brace yourselves!

Summon all your strength!

2For Yahweh will restore the splendor of Jacob

like the splendor of Israel,

though destroyers have laid them waste

and ruined the branches of their vine.

3The shields of his mighty men are red;

the valiant warriors are dressed in scarlet.

The fittings of the chariots flash like fire

on the day they are prepared,

and the spears of cypress

have been brandished.

  • NAH 2:3[NOTE]SHIELDS RED. The attackers were Babylonians and Medes. Red shields may be painted, or red with blood.

4The chariots dash through the streets;

they rush around the plazas,

appearing like torches,

darting about like lightning.

5He summons his nobles;

they stumble as they advance.

They race to its wall;

the protective shield is set in place.

6The river gates are thrown open

and the palace collapses.

  • NAH 2:6[PROPHECY]The gates of the rivers are opened, and the palace is dissolved → HISTORY: When Nineveh fell in 612 BC, the river flooded and broke the walls, and the palace burned. Recorded by Diodorus 2.27.MEDIUM
  • NAH 2:6[NOTE]THE RIVER GATES. The Tigris ran by Nineveh, and the Khosr River ran through it. See How Did Nineveh Fall?

7It is decreed that the city be exiled

and carried away;

her maidservants moan like doves,

and beat upon their hearts.

  • NAH 2:7[TEXT]THEIR HEARTS. The Hebrew says upon their hearts; many Bibles say breasts. Beating the chest in grief.

8Nineveh has been like a pool of water

throughout her days,

but now it is draining away.

“Stop! Stop!” they cry,

but no one turns back.

9“Plunder the silver!

Plunder the gold!”

There is no end to the treasure,

an abundance of every precious thing.

  • NAH 2:9[PROPHECY]The attackers would plunder Nineveh's silver and gold → HISTORY: The Babylonians and Medes carried off great spoil from Nineveh in 612 BC. Recorded in the Babylonian Chronicle.

10She is emptied!

Yes, she is desolate and laid waste!

Hearts melt, knees knock,

bodies tremble, and every face grows pale!

11Where is the lions’ lair

or the feeding ground of the young lions,

where the lion and lioness prowled with their cubs,

with nothing to frighten them away?

  • NAH 2:11[NOTE]THE LIONS' DEN. Assyria's kings loved to show themselves as lions and lion hunters. See Ashurbanipal's Lion Hunt.

12The lion mauled enough for its cubs

and strangled prey for the lioness.

It filled its dens with the kill,

and its lairs with mauled prey.

  • NAH 2:12[ARCHAEOLOGY]4Q169, a Qumran commentary on Nahum that reads the lion of 2:12 as a Lion of Wrath who hanged men alive and names Demetrius king of Greece, see The Nahum Commentary Field Notes page
  • NAH 2:12[NOTE]THE LION. A Qumran commentary on this verse speaks of a Lion of Wrath. See The Nahum Commentary.

13“Behold, I am against you,”

declares Yahweh of Hosts.

“I will reduce your chariots to cinders,

and the sword will devour your young lions.

I will cut off your prey from the earth,

and the voices of your messengers

will no longer be heard.”

  • NAH 2:13[NOTE]I AM AGAINST YOU. The scariest words in the book. Nobody can stand against God.
