Before you read Numbers: who, when, why

BOOK 4 OF 66 · OLD TESTAMENT · BOOKS OF MOSES

Forty years of camping

AUTHOR
Moses, according to Jewish and Christian tradition. Numbers 33:2 says Moses wrote down the stages of the journey at Yahweh's command, and Jesus spoke of the books of Moses as his writings (John 5:46 to 47). Many modern scholars think the book was put together from older sources and finished around 500 BC.
EVENTS TOOK PLACE
From Mount Sinai to the plains of Moab across from Jericho, over almost forty years. It begins on the first day of the second month of the second year after Egypt (1:1), and the camp leaves Sinai on the twentieth day of that month (10:11).
DATE WRITTEN
Traditionally about 1440 to 1400 BC, near the end of the wilderness years. Those who date the Exodus later, in the 1200s BC, move that date down too.
WRITTEN TO
Israel, especially the new generation about to enter Canaan, so they would not repeat their parents' mistakes.
KEY VERSE
Numbers 14:18. Yahweh is slow to anger and abounding in loving devotion, forgiving iniquity and transgression.
NUMBERS IN THE DEAD SEA SCROLLS

Numbers in the Dead Sea Scrolls

These are pieces of 4QNum b, a scroll of Numbers from Cave 4 at Qumran, copied in the last century before Jesus, about 50 to 1 BC. It holds parts of Numbers 11 to 36, and a few passages are written in red ink. Some of its readings match the Samaritan Bible and the Greek Bible instead of the standard Hebrew text. About eleven copies of Numbers were found among the Dead Sea Scrolls. The oldest is 4QLev Num a, from about 150 to 75 BC. But the oldest Bible words of all come from Numbers 6:24 to 26, on two silver scrolls from about 600 BC. See the Ketef Hinnom page. The Setting

Israel has spent about a year at Mount Sinai. They have the law, the tabernacle and the priests. Now it is time to march to the Promised Land, which should take a few weeks. It takes forty years. The English name Numbers comes from the Greek Bible, which called it Arithmoi, because of the two big headcounts in chapters 1 and 26. The Hebrew name is Bemidbar, which means in the wilderness, from the first verse. That name tells you where the whole book happens.

What Was Going Wrong

  • Complaining. Three days after leaving Sinai, the people start complaining, and they keep it up for the rest of the book (11:1, 14:2, 16:41, 21:5).
  • Unbelief. Ten of the twelve spies said the giants in Canaan were too big, and the people believed them instead of God (13:31 to 14:4).
  • Rebellion. Korah and 250 leaders challenged Moses and Aaron, and even Miriam and Aaron criticized Moses (12:1 to 2, 16:1 to 3).
  • Idols At Peor. On the edge of the Promised Land, Israel worshiped Baal of Peor and slept with Moabite women, and 24,000 died in the plague, 25:1 to 9.
  • Moses Slipped Too. Even Moses lost his temper and struck the rock instead of speaking to it, and God said he would not lead Israel into the land (20:10 to 12).

Where to Find Jesus

  • Numbers 9:12. Do not break any of the Passover lamb's bones. Fulfilled when the soldiers did not break Jesus' legs, John 19:36.
  • Numbers 11:7 to 9. Manna fell from heaven. Jesus is the true bread from heaven, John 6:31 to 35.
  • Numbers 19:2 to 9. The red heifer died outside the camp, and its ashes made people clean. Christ's blood cleanses far more, and He suffered outside the gate, Hebrews 9:13 to 14.
  • Numbers 20:11. Water from the rock. Paul says that Rock was Christ, 1 Corinthians 10:4.
  • Numbers 21:8 to 9. Anyone who looked at the bronze snake on the pole lived. So the Son of Man must be lifted up, John 3:14 to 15.
  • Numbers 24:17. A star will come out of Jacob. Justin Martyr and Origen linked it to the wise men's star, Matthew 2:2, and Jesus is the bright Morning Star, Revelation 22:16.
  • Numbers 27:17. Not like sheep without a shepherd. Jesus saw the crowds that way and had compassion, Matthew 9:36, and called Himself the Good Shepherd, John 10:11.

Cool Stuff Most People Miss

  • Joshua Has Jesus' Name. In 13:16 Moses renames Hoshea as Joshua, Yehoshua, which means Yahweh saves. Jesus' Hebrew name Yeshua is a short form of it, and Greek spells both Iesous.
  • The Oldest Bible Words Ever Found. The priestly blessing in 6:24 to 26 is on two tiny silver scrolls from about 600 BC, the oldest known Bible words. Churches and synagogues still say it today.
  • A Lost Book. Numbers 21:14 quotes the Book of the Wars of Yahweh. Nobody has ever found a copy.
  • Five Sisters Won Their Case. Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah asked for their father's land, and God sided with them. Their case became law (27:1 to 11).
  • The Snake On A Pole. Moses' bronze snake was kept until King Hezekiah smashed it, 2 Kings 18:4. The snake on a staff on ambulances comes from Asclepius, a Greek healing god, not from Moses.

Did Anybody Listen?

The first generation did not. Except for Joshua and Caleb, they died in the wilderness, 26:64 to 65. But their children were counted, and the book ends with Israel across from Jericho, ready to go in.

Chapter 1 in 30 seconds

God tells Moses to count every man twenty years old or older who can fight. Tribe by tribe the totals come in, and the grand total is 603,550. The Levites are not counted, because their job is the tent, not the army. Yes, the book starts with a census. Hang in there.

The First Census of Israel// Numbers 26:1–4

1On the first day of the second month of the second year after the Israelites had come out of the land of Egypt, Yahweh spoke to Moses in the Tent of Meeting in the Wilderness of Sinai. He said: 2“Take a census of the whole congregation of Israel by their clans and families, listing every man by name, one by one.

3You and Aaron are to number those who are twenty years of age or older by their divisions—everyone who can serve in Israel’s army. 4And one man from each tribe, the head of each family, must be there with you.

The Leaders of the Tribes

5These are the names of the men who are to assist you:

From the tribe of Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur;

6from Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai;

7from Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab;

8from Issachar, Nethanel son of Zuar;

9from Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon;

10from the sons of Joseph:

from Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud,

and from Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur;

11from Benjamin, Abidan son of Gideoni;

12from Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai;

13from Asher, Pagiel son of Ocran;

14from Gad, Eliasaph son of Deuel;

15and from Naphtali, Ahira son of Enan.”

16These men were appointed from the congregation; they were the leaders of the tribes of their fathers, the heads of the clans of Israel.

The Number of Every Tribe

17So Moses and Aaron took these men who had been designated by name, 18and on the first day of the second month they assembled the whole congregation and recorded their ancestry by clans and families, counting one by one the names of those twenty years of age or older, 19just as Yahweh had commanded Moses.

So Moses numbered them in the Wilderness of Sinai:

20From the sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel, according to the records of their clans and families, counting one by one the names of every male twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 21those registered to the tribe of Reuben numbered 46,500.

22From the sons of Simeon, according to the records of their clans and families, counting one by one the names of every male twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 23those registered to the tribe of Simeon numbered 59,300.

24From the sons of Gad, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 25those registered to the tribe of Gad numbered 45,650.

26From the sons of Judah, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 27those registered to the tribe of Judah numbered 74,600.

28From the sons of Issachar, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 29those registered to the tribe of Issachar numbered 54,400.

30From the sons of Zebulun, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 31those registered to the tribe of Zebulun numbered 57,400.

32From the sons of Joseph:

From the sons of Ephraim, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 33those registered to the tribe of Ephraim numbered 40,500.

  • NUM 1:33[FULFILLS]Jacob said Ephraim the younger would be greater than Manasseh ← GEN 48:19

34And from the sons of Manasseh, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 35those registered to the tribe of Manasseh numbered 32,200.

36From the sons of Benjamin, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 37those registered to the tribe of Benjamin numbered 35,400.

38From the sons of Dan, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 39those registered to the tribe of Dan numbered 62,700.

40From the sons of Asher, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 41those registered to the tribe of Asher numbered 41,500.

42From the sons of Naphtali, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 43those registered to the tribe of Naphtali numbered 53,400.

44These were the men numbered by Moses and Aaron, with the assistance of the twelve leaders of Israel, each one representing his family. 45So all the Israelites twenty years of age or older who could serve in Israel’s army were counted according to their families. 46And all those counted totaled 603,550.

  • NUM 1:46[NOTE]HOW MANY? Many read 603,550 fighting men as two million people or more. Not everyone reads the number that way. See the Big Question pages How Many Left Egypt?

The Exemption of the Levites

47The Levites, however, were not numbered along with them by the tribe of their fathers. 48For Yahweh had said to Moses: 49“Do not number the tribe of Levi in the census with the other Israelites. 50Instead, you are to appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the Testimony, all its furnishings, and everything in it. They shall carry the tabernacle and all its articles, care for it, and camp around it.

51Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites are to take it down, and whenever it is to be pitched, the Levites are to set it up. Any outsider who goes near it must be put to death.

52The Israelites are to camp by their divisions, each man in his own camp and under his own standard. 53But the Levites are to camp around the tabernacle of the Testimony and watch over it, so that no wrath will fall on the congregation of Israel. So the Levites are responsible for the tabernacle of the Testimony.”

54Thus the Israelites did everything just as Yahweh had commanded Moses.
