The Triumphant Messiah// Acts 4:23–31

1Why do the nations rage

and the peoples plot in vain?

  • PS 2:1[PROPHECY]The hostility of kings and rulers against the Messiah foreordained → ACTS 4:25-28
  • PS 2:1[QUOTED]Quoted in the New Testament → ACTS 4:25-26
  • PS 2:1[NOTE]THE FIRST PRAYER MEETING IN ACTS. When Peter and John were threatened, the church quoted these verses about Herod and Pilate, Acts 4:25 to 28.

2The kings of the earth take their stand

and the rulers gather together,

against Yahweh

and against His Anointed One:

3“Let us break Their chains

and cast away Their cords.”

4The One enthroned in heaven laughs;

the Lord taunts them.

5Then He rebukes them in His anger,

and terrifies them in His fury:

6“I have installed My King on Zion,

upon My holy mountain.”

  • PS 2:6[PROPHECY]He would bear the title of King → MT 2:2

7I will proclaim the decree

spoken to Me by Yahweh:

“You are My Son;

today I have become Your Father.

  • PS 2:7[PROPHECY]Declared to be the Beloved Son of God → MT 3:17; ROM 1:4; HEB 1:5; HEB 5:5; 2PE 1:17
  • PS 2:7[PROPHECY]The crucifixion and resurrection foreshadowed → ACTS 13:29-33
  • PS 2:7[ALLUDED TO]The New Testament refers to this → MT 3:17
  • PS 2:7[ALLUDED TO]The New Testament refers to this → MT 17:5
  • PS 2:7[ALLUDED TO]The New Testament refers to this → MK 1:11
  • PS 2:7[ALLUDED TO]The New Testament refers to this → MK 9:7
  • PS 2:7[ALLUDED TO]The New Testament refers to this → LK 3:22
  • PS 2:7[QUOTED]Quoted in the New Testament → ACTS 13:33
  • PS 2:7[QUOTED]Quoted in the New Testament → HEB 1:5a
  • PS 2:7[QUOTED]Quoted in the New Testament → HEB 5:5
  • PS 2:7[QUOTED]Quoted in the New Testament → 2PE 1:17
  • PS 2:7[MESSIAH SPEAKING]Red letters here mean the King, the Anointed One of 2:2, is speaking, and then God's own decree. Acts 13:33 and Hebrews 1:5 apply it to Jesus. Many Jewish readers see a king of David's line being crowned.
  • PS 2:7[NOTE]TODAY I HAVE BECOME YOUR FATHER. Kings in the ancient world were often called a god's son on their crowning day. Paul said God fulfilled this when He raised Jesus from the dead, Acts 13:33.

8Ask Me, and I will make the nations Your inheritance,

the ends of the earth Your possession.

  • PS 2:8[PROPHECY]He would rule the nations with a rod of iron → STILL TO COME

9You will break them with an iron scepter;

You will shatter them like pottery.”

  • PS 2:9[QUOTED]Quoted in the New Testament → REV 2:27
  • PS 2:9[ALLUDED TO]The New Testament refers to this → REV 12:5
  • PS 2:9[ALLUDED TO]The New Testament refers to this → REV 19:15

10Therefore be wise, O kings;

be admonished, O judges of the earth.

11Serve Yahweh with fear,

and rejoice with trembling.

12Kiss the Son, lest He be angry

and you perish in your rebellion,

when His wrath ignites in an instant.

Blessed are all who take refuge in Him.

  • PS 2:12[PROPHECY]Eternal life through faith in Him → JN 20:31
  • PS 2:12[TEXT]KISS THE SON. The word for son here is bar, the Aramaic word, not the usual Hebrew ben. Because of that, some translate do homage in purity or kiss his feet. Many Bibles, like this one, say Kiss the Son.
