Zechariah 2

Chapter 2 in 30 seconds

A man with a measuring tape wants to measure Jerusalem. Do not bother, says God. The city will be too full for walls, and He Himself will be a wall of fire around it. Anyone who touches His people touches the apple of His eye.

The Vision of the Measuring Line// Ezekiel 40:1–4

1Then I lifted up my eyes and saw a man with a measuring line in his hand.

  • ZECH 2:1[ALLUDED TO]The New Testament refers to this → REV 11:1
  • ZECH 2:1[NOTE]A MEASURING LINE. Revelation 11:1 pictures a measuring rod for the temple too.

2“Where are you going?” I asked.

“To measure Jerusalem,” he replied, “and to determine its width and length.”

3Then the angel who was speaking with me went forth, and another angel came forward to meet him 4and said to him, “Run and tell that young man: ‘Jerusalem will be a city without walls because of the multitude of men and livestock within it. 5For I will be a wall of fire around it, declares Yahweh, and I will be the glory within it.’”

  • ZECH 2:5[NOTE]A WALL OF FIRE. Jerusalem had no walls yet. Nehemiah would build them about 75 years later.

The Redemption of Zion// Hosea 3:1–5

6“Get up! Get up! Flee from the land of the north,” declares Yahweh, “for I have scattered you like the four winds of heaven,” declares Yahweh. 7“Get up, O Zion! Escape, you who dwell with the Daughter of Babylon!”

8For this is what Yahweh of Hosts says: “After His Glory has sent Me against the nations that have plundered you—for whoever touches you touches the apple of His eye— 9I will surely wave My hand over them, so that they will become plunder for their own servants. Then you will know that Yahweh of Hosts has sent Me.”

  • ZECH 2:8[NOTABLE]The pupil is the part of the eye you protect without even thinking. That is how God guards His people.
  • ZECH 2:8[NOTE]THE APPLE OF HIS EYE. The pupil, the part of the eye you protect most. Also, the speaker says Yahweh of Hosts has sent Me, 2:9 and 2:11. Many Christians see the Son sent by the Father here.

10“Shout for joy and be glad, O Daughter of Zion, for I am coming to dwell among you,” declares Yahweh. 11“On that day many nations will join themselves to Yahweh, and they will become My people. I will dwell among you, and you will know that Yahweh of Hosts has sent Me to you. 12And Yahweh will take possession of Judah as His portion in the Holy Land, and He will once again choose Jerusalem. 13Be silent before Yahweh, all people, for He has roused Himself from His holy dwelling.”

  • ZECH 2:11[PROPHECY]Many nations would join themselves to Yahweh and become His people → ACTS 15:14-17; EPH 2:19MEDIUM
